What's been happening at the LSRA

News

Posted 08/10/2006

Over the past months the LSRA has been busy with a number of events and activities, especially in the month of September.  It was wonderful to note the attendance and involvement of so many of our members.

  • The Gold Coast has been the host city of two support group meetings.  Our guest speaker Cherie Hugo, Dietician at the John Flynn Hospital, presented an engaging and educational talk on nutritional strategies for Lymphoma patients.
  • On the 14th September a DVD documentary entitled “Journey through Lymphoma – Finding new Horizons” was launched.  Held at Hoyts Cinemas (formerly Fox Studios) in Sydney, this DVD is the collaboration between the LSRA and the Leukaemia Foundation.  To mark World Lymphoma Awareness Day, opera singer, Anthony Warlow takes you on a journey of survival, tears and triumph through the lives of lymphoma survivors Mark Rawles, John Golder and Lauren Hubert.  Limited copies of the DVD are available by contacting 30305050.

World Lymphoma Awareness Day was the focus of a number of fundraising events

  1. Gold Coin Day
  2. Shine for Lymphoma
  3. Barefoot Bowls Day held by The Griffith University – Gold Coast Campus at the Broadbeach Bowls Club.  The winner of the novelty bowl was won by our President, Sharon Millman.  Sharon scored a fishing holiday to Frazer Island and a Magnum of Moet Chandon!  Christmas drinks are taken care of!
  • Dr Mark Bentley gave a wonderful presentation entitled, “Lymphoma-Road Map to A Cure” at the Leukaemia Foundation, in Brisbane on WLAD.  This presentation reviewed different treatment options available to a wide variety of Lymphoma diagnosis. Following Dr Bentley’s presentation there was a patient and carer forum giving a number of patients the opportunity to talk about their experience living with a diagnosis and treatment of their Lymphoma.
  • The LSRA was proud to be on the steering committee for the Inaugural Satellite Symposium - Surviving Cancer in Rural and Regional Australia.  On the 23rd September, the telecast was launched from Westmead Hospital in Sydney to 58 sites around Australia.  This event addressed the significant gap in readily accessible information for people dealing with cancer in rural and regional Australia.  The program included an impressive line-up of speakers from around Australia. Topics covered relate to improving life with cancer such as; emotional, social and personal issues; practical tips; physical recovery and nutritional management.
  • And last but not least, if you were driving over the Story Bridge in Brisbane in the month of September, you would have no doubt noticed the huge banner displaying the LSRA logo and website plus our slogan “Let’s find a Cure”. We also hung a similar banner at Justin Park at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.
  • Don’t forget to purchase your Lymphoma wristbands for $2.50.  Give us a call on 3030 5050 if you would like to order some or pick them up at any support group meeting held by the LSRA.  The wristbands proudly boast our name, our website and “Let’s find a Cure” and can be purchased in a variety of colours.
  • We have copies of 100 Questions and Answers of Lymphoma available, free of charge.
  • Most importantly - Be sure to let us know if your details have changed so we can keep you updated on any new developments throughout the year.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and sincerely thank all of those very generous people who have supported and sponsored campaigns plus to our members and friends who have made donations throughout the year.
